Easter Morning Vibes and Opening Hymn
Hey folks, good morning on this beautiful Easter Sunday! The service kicked off with some cheerful hellos and a nod to He is risen – Amen, right? It sure felt like Easter, even with that Michigan twist. We all stood up to belt out hymn number 231, Christ the Lord is Risen Today. Picture this: lines like Son of Man and angels say, raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia! We sang about praising our glorious King, where O death is now thy sting? And victory over the grave – Hallelujah! Following our exalted head, made like Him, like Him we rise. Ours the cross, the grave, the skies. What a way to start, amen? Then we took our seats, pumped for what was next.
Quick Church Updates
Alrighty, time for announcements. Deacons meeting this Tuesday at 4:15. Next Sunday is communion on the second Sunday of the month, plus our quarterly business meeting that afternoon. No afternoon service today since it’s Easter. Looking ahead, Mother’s Day breakfast on May 10th, and the men’s retreat on the 15th and 16th. That’s the rundown – nothing missed, I think!
Scripture Reading: From Darkness to Empty Tomb
For the reading, we jumped into Luke 23 starting at verse 44. It was about the sixth hour, darkness over the whole land till the ninth, sun’s light failed, temple curtain torn in two. Jesus cried out with a loud voice, Father, into your hands I commit my spirit! He breathed his last. The centurion saw it and praised God, saying certainly this man was innocent. Crowds went home beating their breasts. Acquaintances and women from Galilee watched from afar. Then Joseph from Arimathea, a good righteous council member who didn’t agree with their decision, asked Pilate for Jesus’ body. Wrapped it in linen, laid it in a new stone tomb. Day of preparation, Sabbath starting. Women from Galilee saw it, prepared spices, rested on Sabbath. First day of the week, early dawn, they went with spices, found stone rolled away, no body. Perplexed, two men in dazzling apparel appeared: Why seek the living among the dead? He is risen! Remember what he told you in Galilee – Son of Man delivered, crucified, rise third day. They remembered, told the eleven and others. Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary mother of James, and others shared with apostles, but it seemed like an idle tale, they didn’t believe. Peter ran to the tomb, saw linen cloths alone, went home marveling. Lord add his blessing to the reading of his word. What a powerful passage!
Prayer for Resurrection Joy
We bowed for prayer. Lord, on this resurrection morning, greatest miracle guaranteeing our redemption. If Jesus stayed dead, proof he didn’t pay for sins. But tomb empty, we rejoice! So many in our town haven’t grasped it. Empower us to preach this truth to a lost world. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Worship Songs: His Robes for Mine and More
Back to singing – His Robes for Mine. What a wonderful exchange: clothed in my sin, Christ suffered; draped in his righteousness, I’m justified. In my place, he died. Cling to Christ, marvel at the cost – Jesus forsaken. God’s wrath on sin, sins wages paid. In anguish, as though I were cursed, now embraced. My praise for Christ alone. Amen! Then hymn 224, beautiful response serving all the glory. My richest gain, saved in the blood of Christ. Amazing grace to my heart and soul. Children dismissed after that – you too, buddy!
Sermon: Resurrection – The Heart of It All
Pastor dove in: Most important event in history? Resurrection. No risen Lord, no Christianity – it’d be a whole different religion. Proves Jesus is who he claimed. If he stayed dead, no atonement since death is sin’s punishment. Starting with his death, even there he proved he’s Messiah. Supernatural darkness from noon to midafternoon. Passover full moon, no eclipse possible – pure miracle. Amos 8:9 hinted at sun going down at noon as judgment sign. Natural eclipses foretold judgment; this supernatural one screamed God ain’t happy. Crowd got it. Temple curtain torn top to bottom – thick, multilayered, no human hand. Maybe earthquake helped, but why at Jesus’ death? God destroying his temple (preview of full destruction). And now way to God open – Hebrews 10: by blood of Jesus, new way through veil (his flesh). High priest over God’s house, draw near with true heart. Direct access to heaven’s holy of holies, no fear. Temple existed to protect impure people from holy God; now barriers gone in Christ. Eternal state? No temple needed. Jesus voluntarily gave up his life: Father, into your hands… breathed his last. No one takes it; he lays it down (John 10:18). Dramatic! Witnesses got it – centurion: innocent man! Saw forgiveness prayer, darkness, voluntary death. Not his first crucifixion. Crowd beat breasts, left mourning. Official story of revolutionary? Busted. Burial: Joseph of Arimathea, Sanhedrin dissenter, good righteous guy awaiting kingdom. Risked it all, gave his new family tomb (carved rock, no one else laid there). Rich man’s burial – linen, spices (75-100 lbs to mask smell), huge stone (2 tons, rolled on track). Crucifixion victims usually mass grave for humiliation; this honored him. Fulfills Isaiah 53:9 – grave with wicked, but rich at death, no violence or deceit. Women saw it, started spices but Sabbath hit – no work. Proves he really died: Romans expert at it, sealed tomb no air. They went back expecting corpse. Empty tomb: Women first – in first century, women’s testimony unreliable, embarrassing for fake story. All gospels agree, so true. Stone rolled away by angel(s) – too heavy for humans alone, Matthew says angel rolled, sat on it. Angels in dazzling clothes: Why seek living among dead? Remember his words! Jesus predicted it plainly three times (Luke 9:22, 9:44-45, 18:31-34). Clear: suffer, killed, rise third day. But disciples baffled, didn’t fit crucified Messiah idea. Women told apostles – idle tale, unbelief. If inventing, why make leaders look dumb? Peter checked: linen cloths alone. Thieves unwrap? Gross, with spices? Nah. Jesus vanished through them. No body produced – leaders knew tomb empty, could’ve ended Christianity easy. Didn’t. Proof! Point: Penalty paid, death reversed. Jesus Son of God, atoned. Rose never to die again – firstfruits. Salvation free, he paid. Sinners all welcome.
Closing Song and Charge
We sang Christ Arose: Low in the grave he lay, up from grave he arose with mighty triumph! Lives forever to reign. He is risen! Prayer: Dear Jesus, risen victorious, we await your return. Amen. Go serve the risen King, friends. Tomb empty – live like it!
